October had us thinking about a question that matters enormously in regional communities: how do we keep more value circulating locally?

A trip to Laverton sparked conversations about tourism, economic development and the opportunities ahead for remote communities. It also reinforced the importance of looking beyond individual projects and thinking about the bigger system: where money is spent, who gets the work, where skills are built, and how investment can continue creating value long after the initial dollar is spent.

That’s where circular economy thinking comes in. For regional communities, it can be as practical as buying local, engaging local contractors, supporting Aboriginal businesses and choosing organisations that reinvest in their communities. These decisions help keep jobs, knowledge, profits and opportunities close to home and build stronger, more resilient regional economies.

With October also marking Indigenous Business Month, we reflect on the role Aboriginal businesses play in reinvesting in people, culture and place.

We’re also sharing the Rural Women’s Acceleration Grant and our latest Thoughts & Insights piece exploring First Nations sandalwood harvesting and the opportunities to create jobs while keeping culture strong in remote communities.

Grab a cuppa and catch up on what’s been on our radar this month.
