Project Overview
Yugunga-Nya PBC engaged Wander Consulting to undertake a Strategic Opportunities Assessment to support future economic development planning and Board decision-making.
As the Prescribed Body Corporate representing Yugunga-Nya Traditional Owners, the organisation had identified a range of potential economic development opportunities that could create long-term benefits for members while aligning with its responsibilities to Country, culture and community.
As preparation for the development of its Economic Development Strategy, the Board sought an independent assessment of these opportunity themes to better understand their characteristics, requirements and strategic implications.
Wander was engaged to develop a practical decision-support resource that would inform discussion and provide a strong foundation for future strategic planning.
The Challenge
The organisation had identified a broad range of opportunity themes, each presenting different levels of complexity, investment, operational requirements and long-term potential.
To support strategic planning, the Board required a consistent and objective way to examine each opportunity through the same strategic lens, enabling directors to understand the considerations, trade-offs and organisational implications associated with different pathways.
The objective was not to determine which opportunity should be pursued, nor to undertake detailed feasibility assessments. Instead, the assessment was designed to build a shared understanding of each opportunity theme and support informed discussion ahead of the organisation's Economic Development Strategy.
Wander's Approach
Wander undertook a strategic assessment of the opportunity themes identified by the organisation, applying a consistent evaluation framework across each area.
The assessment considered factors including:
Capital requirements
Operational complexity
Organisational capability
Staffing implications
Revenue potential
Regulatory and compliance considerations
Strategic flexibility
Long-term alignment with organisational objectives
Rather than ranking opportunities or making recommendations, the assessment provided a balanced analysis of each opportunity theme against the same criteria, allowing the Board to meaningfully compare different pathways and understand the strategic implications of each.
The resulting Strategic Opportunities Assessment translated complex information into a clear, accessible and governance-ready resource that supported informed discussion and strategic thinking.
The Outcome
Wander delivered a Strategic Opportunities Assessment that became a key pre-reading document for the Board ahead of the facilitated Economic Development Strategy process.
The assessment provided directors with a structured framework for exploring opportunity themes, understanding potential trade-offs and considering how different pathways aligned with the organisation's long-term aspirations.
By establishing a shared evidence base before strategic planning commenced, the assessment enabled more informed discussions and allowed the Board to enter the strategy process with greater clarity and confidence.
The project highlights Wander's ability to provide practical strategic advisory services that support governance, informed decision-making and long-term planning within Aboriginal organisations and regional contexts.
